I’m excited about 2017 guys!! Hip-hop is not dead! I sincerely believe this is the year rap makes a major comeback. I’m sure some of you would be wondering wetin concern us? But if i did a survey of how many listened to Hip Hop I’m sure going to get a lot of affirmative responses.
So we are settled right? Great, let me continue writing.
So guys as a young knuckle head rap music was the first genre i discovered on my own. So if you see headphones plugged into my ears when i’m working or trying to burn calories or even driving…its most likely rap booming out of those speakers. Hard core grimy rap. I love other genres but Hip Hop is my first love.
But i think for 2017 Remy Ma kicked it all off for me. That 7 minutes of vitriol she spat on “Shether” to Nicki Minaj woke everybody all up. She even roped in Meek Mill , Drake , Safaree and even Nicki Minajs brother into this beef. Devastating stuff. Nicki Minaj’s reply was bleh. But i think she barely escaped this battle with her career in tact. Barely.
Big Sean , Future ( 2 No. 1 albums in two weeks!), Drake and Rick Ross released great albums. I’m happy Rozay has finally publicly called out Birdman on “Idols become rivals” for all the fuckery he has committed on Lil’ Wayne over the years. You see guys, Birdman is the Raymond Dokpesi of Yankee (He doesn’t pay his employees) *Sigh*.
Kendrick is dropping on April 7th people!! I can’t contain my excitement! “Humble” his first single has already done 2 million views on YouTube. So you know that Album will be epic.
Drake though, 1.1 Million Streams already in the first week of releasing “More Life“. Hugely Impressive numbers i must say. “More Life” was Heavily influenced by a lot of sounds especially UK Grime. I kinda feel vindicated because i remember shouting out the UK Hip Hop scene a lot a while back and i’m so happy they created their own sound.
Thankfully, the early groundwork of Dizzie Rascal , Kano (oh i totally loved Kano!), Lethal Bizzle and Wiley has started paying huge dividends. I love that Stormzy , Skepta and Giggs have taken the baton now. Totally love it. So no wonder our culture vulture Drake jumped on that UK grime wave with his “More Life” playlist. No issues though, more power to him.
Even the Legends are working on stuff . I know Jay Z and Nas are currently working on albums in the studio. The Tribe Called Quest and Former Wu-Tang member Raekwon have already dropped fire albums.
See Ehn, 2017 will be a great year for Hip Hop guys. Take my word for it.
